Clouds over the New Technology Telescope (NTT), quite a dramatic shot on the rare occasion at the site.
Artist's impression of the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). The ELT will be the largest optical/infrared telescope in the world — the world's biggest eye on the sky.nThe design for the ELT shown here was published in 2011 and is preliminary.
Part of ESO's Paranal Observatory, the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) observes the brilliantly clear skies above the Atacama desert of Chile. It is the largest telescope in the world surveying the sky in visible light.
Eight ALMA antennas in operation at the 5000-metre-altitude Array Operations Site on the Chajnantor plateau in the Chilean Andes. This photograph was taken on 28 September 2010.nThis image is available as a mounted image in the ESOshop.
Two Auxiliary Telescopes are observing the night sky at the Paranal Observatory. At the moment the picture was taken a total of 15 satellites and two planes were visible in the sky above the mountain.
The Milky Way shines bright above the Martian looking emptiness of the Atacama Desert, home of all ESO Observatories.

The 5,100-m altitude Chajnantor plateau, toward the north. The APEX telescope is visible at a distance, with the site of the ALMA operation site. In the background, a mineral deposits is visible on Cerro Toco. Image taken in December 2005.
